A single hard ride is a fuelling puzzle you can solve in the moment. Get under-fuelled at hour three and you can dig out of it, ride home, and eat your way back to normal by dinner. A multi-day effort-a stage race, a gran fondo series, a bikepacking route, doesn't give you that luxury. Every deficit you create on day one is still there on day three, and by day five it's the difference between finishing strong and not finishing at all.

This is the piece we wish every rider read before their first stage race or bikepacking trip: not the basics of what a gel is, but what actually changes when you have to fuel for tomorrow as well as today.

The maths is bigger than it looks

On a single long ride, most riders can get away with a moderate intake and make up any shortfall afterwards. Stack four or five of those days back to back and the accounting changes completely.

Research on Grand Tour riders found daily carbohydrate intake ranging from roughly 9.6 to 18.5g per kg of body weight across the three weeks, with individual days spiking as high as 22.2g/kg on the hardest stages. On the bike, reported intake during racing has climbed from around 30–60g of carbs per hour a decade ago to 90–120g/hour or more today, dropping right down to 10g/hour on genuine rest days. The point isn't that you need to hit pro-peloton numbers — it's that the target moves a lot depending on the day, and treating every stage the same is one of the fastest ways to end up in a hole you can't climb out of.

For most riders doing multi-day sportives or bikepacking rather than racing, 60–90g of carbohydrate per hour while riding is a sensible working range, built from a mix of glucose and fructose sources (food, drink mix, and gels) so your gut can actually absorb it. On easier days or shorter transfer stages, you can dial that back. On the big mountain day, or the day with a long exposed section between resupply points, it's worth deliberately pushing toward the top of that range, or beyond it, because you're not just fuelling today's effort — you're trying not to start tomorrow already in deficit.

Why "eating enough" gets harder, not easier, as the days go on

Two things work against you as a multi-day event goes on, and both are counterintuitive.

The first is flavour fatigue. Food that tasted great on day one can become genuinely unappetising by day three, even though your energy needs haven't dropped. The second is appetite suppression, sustained hard exercise, heat, and fatigue blunt hunger signals right when you need them most. Riders who wait to feel hungry before eating consistently under-fuel on multi-day events, because the appetite simply doesn't show up on schedule.

The practical fix is the same one used in stage racing: stop relying on hunger and start relying on a clock. Eating on a timer — every 30 to 45 minutes — rather than waiting to feel like eating, keeps intake steady even when your appetite has checked out. Packing genuine variety matters just as much: a mix of real food (rice, potatoes, dates, savoury options) alongside gels, chews, and drink mix gives you somewhere to turn when you simply can't face another sweet product. This is also why it's worth carrying more food than you think you need — aid stations and shops aren't guaranteed to have what you want, and "I'll eat when I get there" is a bet you don't want to lose on day four of five.

The recovery window is the real battleground

This is the part that separates single-day thinking from multi-day thinking: the few hours after you finish riding matter almost as much as the ride itself, because they determine what you show up with tomorrow.

Glycogen resynthesis is fastest in the first 60–90 minutes after finishing and continues for several hours after that, while muscle repair stays elevated for a day or two. In a single-day context, that window is nice to use well. In a stage race or back-to-back bikepacking days, it's close to mandatory — if your next hard effort is within about eight hours, the between-day recovery is genuinely part of the following day's fuelling strategy, not an afterthought to it.

A practical target once you're off the bike: around 1–1.2g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight, combined with 20–40g of protein, in the first couple of hours, alongside fluid and sodium to rehydrate properly. If the turnaround is especially tight, aiming for roughly 1g of carbohydrate per kg of body weight per hour for the first four hours accelerates glycogen restocking meaningfully. Then don't stop at the recovery drink or bar, a proper evening meal, with real carbohydrate volume, is doing at least as much work as anything you take on immediately post-ride. Skipping dinner because you had a recovery shake is one of the more common ways riders quietly dig a multi-day hole.

Hydration and electrolytes compound over days too

Sweat losses that are a minor inconvenience on a single ride become a cumulative problem across a multi-day event, especially in the heat. The common mistake is overcorrecting with plain water: drinking heavily without replacing sodium dilutes blood sodium levels and raises the risk of hyponatremia, which gets more dangerous, not less, the more consecutive long hot days you stack up. Pairing fluid intake with deliberate sodium replacement — tuned to your own sweat rate rather than a generic number — matters more with each passing stage, not less.

Stage race or bikepacking — the format changes the plan

The principles above hold either way, but the two formats put pressure on different parts of the plan.

In a supported stage race, food is provided, aid stations are stocked, and the biggest risk is passive fuelling — grazing on what's offered rather than hitting a deliberate target. It's easy to assume the organisers have it handled and end up under-fuelled anyway, especially on transfer stages that feel "easy enough" to skip a proper feed. The fix is to keep counting: know your rough carbohydrate target for the day regardless of how the stage feels, and don't let the presence of food stands lull you into eating reactively instead of on schedule.

Bikepacking flips the problem. Nothing is provided, so the plan has to survive contact with whatever's actually available — a fuel station with nothing but crisps and fizzy drinks, a shop that's shut, a resupply point that's further than the map suggested. Here the priority is redundancy: carry more than a day's worth of buffer, know which non-cycling foods (bread, cheese, chocolate milk, instant noodles) can plug a gap when your usual products run out, and build slack into the plan for the day that doesn't go as mapped. The riders who struggle most in unsupported multi-day events aren't the ones with the wrong product — they're the ones with no plan B when the right product isn't there.

Practice this before the event, not during it

Everything above assumes your gut can actually handle the volume of carbohydrate you're asking it to process, and that's not guaranteed — it's trained. Higher carb intakes, multiple carbohydrate sources, and eating under fatigue all put real demand on digestion, and the athletes who handle 90g+/hour comfortably in an event are the ones who've rehearsed it on long training rides beforehand. The event itself is the wrong place to discover that a product doesn't sit well with you. Lock in your carb sources, your timing, and your hydration approach well before day one, and then don't deviate from it just because day three feels like a good day to try something new.

A simple framework for the trip

Put together, a multi-day fuelling plan comes down to four decisions, repeated daily:

  • On the bike: 60–90g of carbohydrate per hour as a baseline, pushed higher on the longest or hardest days and eased off on shorter transfer days — timed by the clock, not by appetite.

  • Immediately after: carbohydrate and protein within the first hour or two, prioritised even harder if the next stage starts within eight hours.

  • In the evening: a real meal with real carbohydrate volume — the recovery bar or shake is a supplement to this, not a replacement for it.

  • Throughout: sodium alongside fluid, adjusted for heat and sweat rate, reassessed daily rather than fixed once and forgotten.

None of this is complicated in isolation. What makes multi-day fuelling hard is doing it consistently on day four when you're tired, your appetite has gone quiet, and everything in your bag tastes the same as it did yesterday. Plan for that version of yourself now, while you're reading this with a full appetite and a clear head — they'll thank you on the road.
